Benifits of BioThane

Waterproof

BioThane is waterproof and durable, thanks to its PVC coating and polyester webbing core. It is stronger than imitation waterproof webbing products made with nylon and lower quality coating.

Durability

BioThane is highly durable and resistant to wear and tear, but not indestructible. It is abrasion-resistant and has exceptional strength. However, it can be damaged by sharp objects such as teeth.

Maintenance

BioThane requires minimal maintenance compared to leather. While leather needs conditioning to prevent drying out and cracking, BioThane only needs a quick wipe down to stay clean.

Odor Resistant

BioThane is designed to resist odor and stains, but it may not be completely odor-proof. Strong substances like skunk spray can leave lingering odors that regular cleaning may not remove.

BioThane Care Instructions

  • 1. Wipe down with a damp cloth

    2. If needed add a bit of dish detergent

    3. Rinse off any soap residue with clean water

    4. Towel dry

  • Deep cleaning (after a big adventure)

    2. Brush away sand or debris with a clean cloth, sponge or old toothbrush

    3. Flex the material gently so sand dislodges

    .

  • DEET-based insect repellents:

    • DEET can cause the BioThane coating to become tacky, develop “pitting,” or stain.

    • Harsh solvents and chemicals: Avoid using undiluted bleach, acetone, methylated spirits, industrial disinfectants , or oil based soaps, as these can weaken or discolor the material.

    • Abrasive tools: Do not use steel wool, wire brushes, or heavy abrasive pads, which can scratch and damage the protective coating .

    • Machine washing/dishwashers: High heat from dishwashers or the mechanical agitation in washing machines can damage the coating or cause hardware to scratch and fail.

    • Extreme heat: Avoid radiators, direct dryer heat or leaving gear in hot car vehicles, which can cause fading, cracking or loss of pliability over time.

    • Saltwater residue: While BioThane itself is waterproof, salt left to dry on hardware can cause corrosion. Always rinse with fresh water and dry thoroughly after beach trips.

    • Coiling too tightly: For long-term storage, avoid coiling the material too tightly or crumpling it; hanging it on a hook or laying it flat helps maintain its shape and prevent creases.

    • Inspection: Regularly inspect and test your gear and hardware to ensure they are intact and working properly.

    • Dry Gear: Always dry your gear after use and store it in an open, well -ventilated location, ideally indoors. Hanging your gear is a great way to make sure it stays dry between uses.

    • Chewing: Although durable, BioThane is not indestructible and does not prevent dogs from chewing on it.

    • Odors: While odor -resistant, extremely pungent odors like skunk spray may not be able to be totally removed.

    • Staining: Be aware that lighter colors are more prone to staining from dirt or oils over time.

    • Color migration: Avoid storing different colors of BioThane ( especially fluorescent or light colors) in direct contact with one another, as the dye can transfer between pieces .

    • Wrapping around hands: When using BioThane long lines , do not wrap the line around your wrist or hands. Its smooth texture can cause severe friction burns if a dog lunges suddenly.

    • Flea Collars: Some flea treatments can react with the BioThane coating and impact its structural integrity.
